As we get older, our skin loses elasticity and begins to sag. We notice more fine lines and wrinkles around our eyes and mouth. Sun damage and age spots begin to take their toll on the smooth clarity we enjoyed in our youth. A good skincare regimen can help reduce the appearance of imperfections and keep us looking fresh-faced, but sometimes more intensive measures are required to turn back the hands of time.

Facelift surgery (or rhytidectomy) has long been one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States, and most clients report high long-term satisfaction with the results. However, the procedure does come with some drawbacks including the high cost, the post-operative discomfort, the long recovery period, and the invasiveness of the operation itself.

But in recent years, surgical technology has given us a new kind of non-surgical facelift procedure: a short outpatient procedure that can be performed under local anesthetic instead of general anesthesia. We’re talking about the revolutionary thread face lift! This non-surgical alternative to traditional facelift surgery is not only more affordable than its predecessor, it’s also less invasive, less painful, and comes with a much shorter recovery time.

What Is the Thread Lift Procedure?

Unlike a traditional facelift, in which a cosmetic surgeon makes an incision from the earlobes into the hairline, cuts away excess skin and fatty tissue, gently tugs the face upward and back, and then closes the incision with sutures, a thread lift facelift involves injecting absorbable sutures into the face with a hypodermic needle. These tensile threads help to lift the face up and back from beneath the skin, giving the patient results comparable to a traditional surgical facelift.
The advantages of the thread lift procedure over traditional facelift surgery are numerous, and they include:

  • Minimal discomfort to the patient. Topical analgesic is applied before the procedure, and a continuous application of ice is used throughout to ensure that the patient remains pain-free, or experiences minimal pain.
  • Shorter duration. Traditional facelift surgery can take as long as five hours, whereas a non-surgical face lift can be completed in as little as 45 minutes.
  • Briefer recovery time. It takes about two weeks to fully heal after a surgical facelift, and only about two days to recover from a thread lift facelift.
  • A non-surgical facelift costs potentially thousands of dollars less than the surgical variety, which is important considering cosmetic procedures aren’t generally covered by insurance.

How Does the Procedure Work?

As we mentioned above, a thread lift involves injecting tensile threads into the skin with a hypodermic needle. The nature of the procedure means that specific problem areas can be more easily targeted than they can with a traditional facelift, and the threads can even be injected into other body parts including the knees and buttocks.
There are two varieties of threads: lighter Nova Threads made of polydiaxanone which dissolve in four to six months, and heavier Silhouette threads made of polylactic acid which are effective for twelve to eighteen months. Silhouette threads are the more popular choice for patients seeking longer-term results because they actually stimulate the skin to produce new collagen. These new collagen cells are what give the patient a taut, rejuvenated-looking face.
However, Nova Threads are an ideal choice for those uncertain about the procedure and its efficacy, as the results are more temporary. They offer an opportunity for the patient to “test drive” a thread lift without the risk of unwanted long-term results.

Are Thread Lifts for Everybody?

As with any cosmetic procedure, the thread lift is not “one size fits all.” Different variables must be considered before a cosmetic surgeon can recommend a thread lift or point the patient toward another alternative. These variables include the skin’s elasticity, thickness, and the degree of sagging that has already occurred.
A patient with exceptionally thin, sagging skin will not achieve the same results as a patient with thicker skin and minimal sagging. For this reason, it’s vital to have a consultation with a qualified surgeon before committing to the procedure. That’s where we come in!
